She pushed between bushes and over logs, hoping she’d stop growing soon. She glanced down at herself to see another layer of scales peeling off, dropping, and leaving a trail.

Would Dawz the Horrible follow her? Would he collect her scales and keep them in a sock?

Mim wanted to loop back and pick up all her scales. They were hers. She didn’t want his stink all over them.

But she couldn’t trust her instincts. She had to do the opposite. She had to keep moving away from him.

Mim left her scales behind.
